Box is a dense bushy evergreen shrub with deep green glossy leaves, if left for a very long time it will form into a tree. It likes a sunny or shady site and can tolerate a dry or retentive soil. It is completely hardy, what an excellent plant!
Most commonly it's used for creating hedging or amazing topiary shapes. There are many different species of Buxus, at Todd's we mainly stock Buxus sempervirens in all shapes and sizes.
Box is an incredibly treasured plant as it's so undemanding and yet gives us year round structure. It will tolerate dry shade providing it is watered until established, and will also do well in sunny or a more moist site (providing it is not waterlogged). It is suited to being planted into the ground or planted into a container and can tolerate being trimmed back severely if necessary as it will readily shoot from bare wood; this is why it's so popular for topiary.
Box is invaluable for creating the 'bones' of the garden, and any designer worth their salt will always use dense evergreen plants such as box, bay or yew to form the main structure on which to base all the other planting.
