| Cyathea australis (Rough tree fern) An absolutely stunning tree fern. Slender trunks with a less 'hairy' appearance than Dicksonia. The frond bases are covered in lumps which feel like a grater! Vicious to move but fantastic in the garden. Certainly earns its common name. One of the hardier Cyathea (along with Cyathea smithii). Height 40 feet (in its native habitat). | Dicksonia antarctica AGM (Tasmanian tree fern) The original UK tree fern. First made an appearance back in Victorian times when returning cargo ships from OZ used the heavy hairy trunks as ballast!! They have made a massive comeback in the last ten years proving hardiness and growth rates. New EC directives are making it harder and harder to import these beauties so get one while you can. Naturally they are shade lovers but if they get plenty of water they seem to thrive in the sun. When we say plenty of water we really mean it.
