Trachycarpus fortunei, Chinese windmill palm, a native of China, is the hardiest palm available in the UK. Trachycarpus fortunei is a very attractive evergreen palm with a wonderful textural hessian like hairy trunk. The large fan like leaves can reach to enormous proportions, but the overall growth rate is average. The palm is very easily maintained in full sun, and can tolerate quite a shady spot, providing there is enough moisture and not too much wind. Harsh wind can make them look a bit scruffy and weather beaten, so for a windy site, it's best to opt for a different palm like Chamaerops humilis.
Trachycarpus fortunei are very well suited to a container or in an open ground situation, they love a rich soil and can grow 20cm of trunk each year once established if happy. They look particularly fantastic when planted in a group of three or more of varying sizes.
