Butia capitata (Jelly palm)
One of the toughest palms around, reasonably new to popularity this feather palm has repeatedly shown itself to be hardy to -12°C. It can withstand reasonable amounts of wind and rain - ideally suited to the UK climate. Graceful arching leaves can reach 2 - 2.5m long. A stunning palm and an absolute must. The leaves vary in colour from green to blue.

Chamaerops humilis var. argentea (cerifera)
Slower growing than the straight C.humilis. The fan shaped leaves can be slightly thinner and take on a glaucous blue colouration. New to cultivation so not many big plants about. Looks fantastic in a container against a warm wall.

Chamaerops humilis AGM (European fan palm)
This is the only palm native to Europe, a smaller stocky palm that is very tough and copes well with windy situations. Beautiful green fan shaped leaves. A staple for the exotic garden. Produces suckers from its base to give more of a 'bushy' palm. Final Height Up to 4m - slowly.

A traditional palm as seen pretty much everywhere in the Mediterranean. A wonderfully structural palm that is quite hardy when mature. Trunk forming and quite fast growing for a palm. With plenty to eat and drink and it will perform well.

The hardiest palm available in the UK. One of the staples. Loves to be planted in rich soil and watered well. Grows a 'hairy' trunk with large fan shaped leaves which don't take well to the wind. Can grow 6-12 inches in trunk each year once established. Fantastic value and a real must have.

Washingtonia filifera AGM (Washington palm)
A quick growing palm with glossy green fan leaves and a glossy brown trunk made up of the old leave bases. Reasonably hardy once established. Tends to defoliate in the winter. Protect from the worst weather. Two mature examples in Colchester's Castle Park have coped well over the last few winters not even defoliating. Produces plenty of foliage each season.

Since Fargesia murielae first flowered some wonderful new cultivars have been discovered, 'Bimbo' being one of them. With a maximum height of just 1m and spread of the same, this bamboo is ideal if space is an issue. Responds brilliantly in a container providing sufficient water and feed are made available. With small leaves and plenty of canes this is proving a very hardy bamboo. Can take some direct sun as long as it's not too fierce. Grows at its best in dappled shade. Height 1m (in the UK). Fargesia murielae 'Jumbo'
Definitely the 'big brother' of the murielae clan! Can grow up to a massive 4m (that's 13 feet to our older friends) Makes a fantastic spot plant in the border or an effective hedge. Clump forming, despite its height this bamboo is well behaved. Slightly larger leaves than usual and a more erect growth habit, definitely one for the collection. Height Up to 4m (in the UK). Fargesia from Jiuzhaigou, China
A rare bamboo with a mass of red canes which stay slim, with small lime green leaves. Very well behaved, forming a neat clump. Very tolerant of deep shade but also happy in sun. Looks fantastic in a container on that deep shady corner of the patio. Height 3 to 4m (in the UK). Hardiness -20°C.

Probably the best known and most requested bamboo in Britain. Brilliant black canes with glossy green leaves. A striking bamboo that should be planted where it can be appreciated from the whole garden. Phyllostachys vivax inversa
Some give this spectacular bamboo the name of 'Huanguenzhu' but it's more common name of vivax inversa describes it best. The opposite colouration of vivax f. aureocaulis. Random yellow strips on thick green canes. Just as beautiful. Dare to be different with this more unusual bamboo.

Pseudosasa japonica AGM
A fantastic broad leaved bamboo. Incredibly hardy and tough. Loves having wet feet. Ideal on that rivers edge (We can dream). Not the best behaved so give it some room or control it.
