Dryopteris affinis is a semi-evergreen ground fern, robust and magnificent with long shuttlecock fronds. It will be evergreen in a sheltered garden. This fern will tolerate some sun, especially if watered well in its first season but it looks best planted in a more shady aspect in a fertile soil. All ground ferns love a layer of mulch in the autumn.
